Am I ready for what this day may bring?

I don’t think anyone has ever stopped to explain to me why it is important to be ready for my day. I don’t even think this was an important subject in the police academy.  But I can tell you that through the years I have stopped to wonder why I didn’t know this sooner.

What am I talking about?

I am talking about having my meals ready for the day, having a go-to stress busting kit and just being ready instead of spur of the moment nutrition.

I will be honest with you; these were not important issues for my family growing up.

It was feed your family, support them, make sure they have roof over their heads, you get the picture.

As an adult, I will be honest, it wasn’t my first idea when it came to survival.

But people, for us First Responders, this is key in helping us reduce our stress.

The fact that we have one of the most stressful jobs out here, we should be more mindful of what we are putting into our bodies.

If we are constantly on the go, we run out of time or don’t get a break, we are turning to hurtful nutrition, unhealthy but quick choices.

Trust me I get it.

We can be so busy, going from call to call that we need something to eat.

The quickest thing to get us not so “HANGRY.”

We must change that.

I am not a therapist, I am not a doctor, or a nutritionist, but what I am is someone who has lived through this FIRST RESPONDER life for 23 years.

This isn’t about weight or losing weight, this is about fueling our bodies for what is coming our way.

This is planning what we will turn to when the day is crazy.

People, I don’t always pack my lunch, but when I order I make smart choices, healthy choices.

That’s what this is about.

This may sound familiar to you.

You get cleared to go on your break, you are heading there, and it never happens.

A call comes in, you don’t quite get to eat and you are starving.

Naturally you are going to go get something on the go and that is not always the best for you.

Here are a few facts about what it does to us.

Stress affects your body, your thoughts and feelings, and your behavior according to the Mayo Clinic. If you don’t check those things out, they can create health problems. You can read more about that here http://mayoclinic.org

What can you do right now to get ready?

I share a few tips below.

  1.  Get snacks that you like and stock up.
  2. Get a lunch bag with ice packs and have that ready.
  3. Drink water.  Water is important and can help reduce your stress.
  4. Stay away from sugar and sodas.
  5. Have your stress busting kit with all the things that can help you relax in your car.
  6. Lastly, don’t forget the deep breaths.  These will help you reset, refocus, and relieve stress.

Please do something daily to relieve your stress.

Place yourself on top of the list.
